Fun Runs of the East Coast



Some people really hate to run. They find it boring, not to mention exhausting. But there are some people who love it, and there are fun runs happening all over the east coast that include free food, exciting atmospheres, and fun philanthropic opportunities. Whether you’re running by yourself or with a team, running won’t be boring if you do one of these fun runs.


Zombie Mud Run

Reading, PA & East Windsor, NJ

This run-for-your-life, post-apocalyptic themed run is filled with adrenaline and mud. Runners get the choice of being either Humans or Zombies in this Zombie Mud Run. As a “Human”, your objective is to complete a 5K obstacle mud-filled track and make it to the Green Zone before a Zombie tags you. Meanwhile, the “Zombies” are running through the course trying to tag as many humans as possible. At the end of the course (aka the Green Zone), there is a giant celebration. This race is complete with music, food, water, and beer.


Krispy Kreme Challenge

Raleigh, NC

The challenge (if you choose to accept it) is to complete a five-mile run and consume 12 Krispy Kreme donuts in under an hour. This challenge donates all their proceeds to the UNC Children’s Hospital. The race starts out at North Carolina State University’s Memorial Bell Tower. Then, runners run 2.5 miles to the downtown Raleigh Krispy Kreme where they attempt to consume a dozen delicious, glazed donuts. Once all 12 donuts are consumed, the runners run the same 2.5 miles back to the University’s Bell tower. This delicious race tests physical fitness and eating fortitude.


Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

Walt Disney World Resort, FLA

All of Disney’s favorite characters host a magical weekend in Walt Disney World filled with running. From kids’ races to a full marathon, this event has several different races for runners with different levels of skill. Participants can enjoy Disney entertainment and finishers earn one-of-a-kind Disney medals. Participants also receive goodie bags with Disney gifts and treats. If you really enjoy running, Disney offers the Castaway Challenge, which requires participants to complete one of the Marathon Weekend (5K or longer) races and then also complete the 5K on Castaway Cay. The magical memories will last longer than any souvenir you would buy.


Cupid’s Undie Run

Multiple locations along the east coast

This run might knock your socks off...and all your other clothes. Participants can create teams and wear crazy outfits decked out with all their undergarments. This run supports those affected by Neurofibromatosis (NF) and raises money to end NF. The event starts off with drinking and dancing (plus an open bar, if the participant raised $250). Then, participants run about a mile long run leading to the end-of-course celebratory dance party.


Hot Chocolate 15K/5K

Philadelphia, PA

Allstate hosts their Hot Chocolate 15K/5K run, where runners can compete in either a 5K (3.1 miles) or 15K (9.3 miles) run. Along the course, enjoy sweet stations that include marshmallows, chocolate chips, and M&Ms. At the end, participants receive a sweet goodie bag to commemorate the race, including a full-zip jacket with a hood. 15K finishers receive a medal featuring a chocolate bar look-alike wrapped in gold.


New Year Midnight Run

Central Park, NY

Kick off the new year on the right step. Start out the run in Rumsey Playfield in Central Park for a Pre-Race Festival with music and dancing as the year comes to a close. As the countdown to midnight begins, get ready to start. At the stroke of midnight, this 4-mile race begins, as well as a spectacular display of fireworks. There are also post-race festivities and the top three men and women overall receive an award.


The Empire State Building Run-Up

Inside the Empire State Building, NY

Presented by Turkish Airlines and Challenged Athletes Foundation for more than 40 years, the Empire State Building Run-Up challenges runners around the globe to race it’s 86 flights (1,576 steps). This race has very limited space and registration is done through a lottery. This challenge is highly coveted by professional runners from all over the world. The fastest time record for women is 11:23 and for men it is 9:33. Water is supplied to runners on flight 60.


Night Nation Run

Multiple locations along the East Coast

This running music festival has a music-filled 5K course with filled with live DJs, light shows, bubble zones, and more. Finish the race with an epic after-party featuring top headliner DJs. The Night Nation Run is a proud supporter of Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), their official charity. SU2C provides accelerated, innovative cancer research. Participants get a free t-shirt.


Warrior Dash

Multiple locations along the East Coast

This 5K obstacle race and festival is complete with a get-dirty race that anyone can start and finish. Obstacles include mud mounds, muddy mayhem, no man’s land, rock slide, summit plummet, super soaker, under the wire, warrior roast, and more. Finish the race to enjoy a party at a festival with a live DJ, great beer, activities, and sponsors. The after-party also includes food, shopping, contests, and their classic Warrior Nation fuzzy helmets. This fun run donates their money to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.


Electric Run

Multiple locations along the East Coast

This 5K run is a must glow! Participants receive an ultimate LED glow package, which includes LED shades, a glow ring, glow batons, and more. Along the course, there are about six lit zones that include flashing inflatable archways, neon trees, hanging umbrellas, cascading fountains, etc. Upbeat and energizing music is played throughout the course. At the end, there is a DJ-propelled after-party and beer garden. The net proceeds benefit MLB Charities to support youth baseball and youth softball programming.


NYC Pizza Run

Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park, NY

This 5K run includes a NYC Pizza Run T-Shirt, 2 slices of pizza, prizes for the top finishers, pizza run goodie bags, and a free drink at the after-party. Participants run through the course while stopping to eat two slices of pizza at checkpoints throughout the course. The first person to complete the run is crowned the NYC Pizza Run Champion. Once completed, there is an after-party complete with a DJ and a free drink for all participants. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.


NYC Cupcake Run

Astoria Park, NY

This 5K run is complete with a NYC Cupcake Run T-Shirt, 3 cupcakes during the race, prizes for the top finishers, cupcake goodie bags, free lunch, and a drink at the after-party. This run is open to all ages. Enjoy your fist cupcake halfway through the first lap, the second one at the end of the first lap, and the third one halfway through the second lap. At the after-party, enjoy BBQ lunch at Rocky McBrides with a free drink. A portion of the proceed from the race benefit New York Cares.
